A town in Virgina, (United States of America), which issued a provisional 5 cent stamp in 1861 pending supplies of the confederate general stamp issue.

The Jettersville stamp, (one of the most primitive produced during the American civil war), consisted of the numeral 5 and the initials of the postmaster, A. H. Atwood. They were struck by hand in black on white paper.

Very few of these stamps are believed to exist.

A local post operated in 1848 at Baltimore, Maryland, (United States of America), by a post office letter carrier, Ezekiel C Johnson.

A 2 cent stamp was issued in black on lavender paper. This had a typeset design inscribed 'CITY DESPATCH / POST, / 2 CENT STAMP / Johnson & CO.' in four lines.

A paper join occurs where reels of paper are joined together prior to printing or where a torn sheet is repaired.

A printing join is a coloured line printed at the edges of each plate and is formed when two curved line engraved plates have been clamped together in the press for intaglio printing.

A local post which operated in Brooklyn, New York, (United States of America), in 1844 or 1845.

A 2 cent stamp was issued which was printed in black on pink glazed paper. he upright design showed George Washington with 'JONE' CITY EXPRESS' in an arc at the top and 'POST 2 CENTS' atthe base.

It is possible that the post was set up by George C Jones and it worked in collaboration with Boyd's City Express, and had only a brief existance.

Forgeries and bogus types exist.

A Portuguese inscription meaning newspapers or journal which is found on stamps issued between 1876 and 1894 to prepay the postage on newspapers.

These stamps were also avalible for franking ordinary letters.

Brazil issued similarly inscribed stamps between 1889 and 1893.

An inscription meaning 'Land of the Southern Slavs' which is found on Yugoslavian issues.

Danish, Norwegian or Swedish word for 'Christmas' inscribed on christmas seals issued by the Scandinavian countries since 1904.

A strip, (or pair), of stamps from a coil in which adjoining impressions are out of alignment.

Indian native state in the Kathiawar peninsula, (known also as Sourashtra or Soruth), which issued stamps between 1864 and 1950.

Stamps inscribed only in Gujariti or Nagri characters were issued in Jumagadh between 1864 and 1877. Between 1877 and 1923 the stamps were inscribed SORUTH POSTAGE. These were followed in 1923 by stamps inscribed SOURASHTRA or SOURASHTRA POSTAGE.

These inscriptions are misleading as the stamps were only issued in Jumagadh state and not throughout the Kathiawar district.

Most of the stamps were printed on the Jumagadh state pres.
